Over the past 40 years, we have grown extensively and continue to invest in our employees, their safety and the potential to identify new and innovative ways to accomplish our clients’ goals. The following timeline highlights some of the major events in the history of Sunland Construction, Inc.
Started by T.A. (Thomas Alvin) Fore. He was a Marine and a welder and he started working for the local gas company doing underground work with just a backhoe and some help from friends.
Success through high quality and integrity work brings more work. Foremost must add more crews throughout South Carolina. It was an important time as some small towns were just getting gas lines for the first time ever!
Important time for Foremost because the local gas company was going full throttle to replace rusting bare steel gas mains as well as some older technology polyethylene pipes. Foremost again grew in number of crews and people.
After that “replacement boom time” work slowed for a couple of years and Foremost went through a shrinking period. Leadership wasn’t happy about that after all the success, so they vowed to earn sustainable growth with the gas companies.
During this time period, Foremost learned to do “bid work” for both the local gas company and other small gas companies throughout SC, NC, and GA cementing an even stronger reputation with customers for Quality, Integrity and Perseverance all while working Safe and like a Family with them.
Based on reputation, Foremost was honored with a very large growth spurt with customers, expanding its territory throughout most of SC and quadrupling the number of daily work crews!
Continued growth both inside our blanket contract but also several bid projects.
Foremost was doing so well that Mr. John “Eddie” Soileau from Sunland Construction decided to buy Foremost. Mr. Eddie has a reputation for running a great mainline pipeline construction business and wanted to add distribution (municipality) gas construction work to Sunland. Mr. Eddie also has a reputation that if he buys something he doesn’t mess with it, so Foremost kept our name and identity but we adopted Sunland Logo.
During this year Foremost made an important decision to start what we call “joint trench work” which means we install both gas and electric in the same ditch for our customers.
While continuing our gas only installations where we started, we were now doing bid work and joint trench work throughout SC, NC, GA, VA, and FL.
Because of growth, Foremost needed a better headquarters location with a good sized yard and shops. This is the year we moved all that to Gaston, SC.
We expanded our footprint by purchasing a local contractor upstate and that opened the door to begin working for another gas company. Once again, we added more crews.
Once again, success gets you work and Foremost received a blanket contract with a gas company in North Carolina. This meant hiring 10-12 crews installing gas lines.
Foremost celebrates its 50th anniversary.
Foremost acquires an HDD (horizontal directional drilling) contractor with 4 small to medium rigs.
Foremost currently has 210 employees working on 65 crews in SC and NC.
